2010 Tax Information

October 19, 2009

Appalachian Outreach has good news to share with you: for the fourth year, we have been accepted into the Neighborhood Investment Program (NIP) operated by the West Virginia Development Office.

For fiscal year 2010, West Virginia legislators have set aside $2.5 million in tax credits with NIP. These credits are disbursed through approved 501(c)3 charitable organizations that serve needy residents and economically depressed areas of the state. Appalachian Outreach has been allocated $4980 in tax credits to be distributed this fiscal year to businesses and individuals.

In our short history of seven years, we have already served 61,000 victims of poverty and disaster in 25 of West Virginia's 55 counties. We have also provided disaster assistance to 650 families locally.

To qualify for tax credits, an individual or business must donate a minimum of $500 (consecutive smaller donations do not qualify) to a NIP-approved organization in order to receive a tax credit of up to 50% of the donated amount. These credits can be used to reduce state corporate net income taxes, business franchise taxes, and personal income taxes. The amount of the credit may be taken in one year or over a five-year period, beginning in the tax year in which the donation was made. Those using the January–December tax year may make a donation in 2009 and before June 2010 for the next tax year.

With combined federal and state tax savings, a contribution to Appalachian Outreach could have a much smaller net cost to you, make a larger impact on the less fortunate, and significantly reduce your tax liabilities.

For a $1000 donation by a taxpayer in the 28% federal tax bracket:

  • $1000 × 28% = $280 in federal tax savings
  • $1000 × 50% = $500 in state tax savings
  • $780 in total tax savings

Eligible contributions to Appalachian Outreach for NIP tax credits can be in the form of personal check, real estate, and/or publicly traded stock. AOI has $4980 of NIP credit that can be issued before June 30, 2010. Credits are distributed on a first come, first served basis.
